Exploring the Golden Age of Baghdad AD900

The year 6 children have had a fantastically productive and creative last week of this spring term, particularly within their history topic of Baghdad.

Using clues gleaned from ancient scripts, the children had to visualise what a bird’s-eye view of Baghdad might have looked like. They included all of the features and then the actual view was revealed to the children so that they could compare. Below you will find a range of examples of their thinking.

In addition to this work, the children have also produced their third piece of writing within our Shackleton unit – this time a narrative recount of the moment at which The Endurance succumbed to the pressure of the ice. Some superb, suspenseful writing has come from this.

Over half-term, we would like the children to continue to use SATsBootcamp to work on their known areas of need in Reading, Writing and Maths – while also having a great and well-deserved rest.

Learning from an expert in their field…

On Monday the Year 6 children were treated to an audience with Polly Ho Yen, author of ‘Boy in the Tower’ – a novel that they have studied in Year 5.

They learned about her journey to becoming a novelist and Polly really conveyed the message to the children that, ‘Yes you can!’ do anything in life. She pursued her passion for writing stories that interested her and this was her epiphany – ‘This is what I want to do, so I will!’

The children will be able to deploy her wisdom into some story writing next week, where they will write a narrative about when Shackleton’s Endurance succumbs to the forces of the Weddell Sea and the pack ice.

It’s all about the ratio…

A great week’s maths learning has been had by all in Year 6 this week, where we have become familiar with the language of ratio and a range of strategies that can be applied to solve this type of problem. See below for a series of photos that demonstrate a part of this learning journey. Look out for the pupil explanations of their thinking which is an example of metacognition in action.
