Ukulele Rocks!

Year 5 returned this week to their weekly ukulele lessons with lots of rocking beats. They practised their key skills from last half term such as strumming and picking specific chords, playing and singing in tandem and creating their own tunes to songs.

Creativity inspired by our World War 2 topic!

Our final week sees us completing our World War 2 topic in History for this half term. The children have so enjoyed learning about this topic and deepen our knowledge on our sustainability trip, in lessons and through our home learning. The children are very excited about a day trip planned in November to Fort Nelson, the Royal Armories, to become part of a WW2 squadron to complete challenges as if the children were taking on the different job roles undertaken in wartime.

Drama in Year 5!!

This week, Year 5 has been exploring character’s emotions and feeling based on evacuation scenarios. They showed with their body language and facial expressions how they were feeling whilst saying goodbye to their mothers at the train station, waiting to be picked up by their new foster family and their first day at a new school. We used characters from our guided reading text: Letters from the Lighthouse and Carrie’s War to inspire the characterisation in our drama work in order to aid our diary writing.

Creation

In our RE this half term we have been deepening our understanding of the Creation story by  developing an understanding of people’s responsibility to the world, as co-creators. Out of Lego, we made a creation of something in the world that we valued or something we would like to see created. Our Lego creations were then destroyed. We thought about how the destruction of our creations made us feel and compared this to how God must feel about his world and what we are doing to it.

Reminders for next week….

-Home learning due on Tuesday

-PE on Thursday

-Non-Uniform day Friday

Evacuation Day Part II

When Year 5 went back to 1939…..

Year 5 went back to 1939 on our Evacuation Day!!

We dressed in World War II type clothing and completed our look with gas mask boxes, ID cards, ration cards and evacuation tags.

We spent the day learning about the role of propaganda during the war; designing our own evacuation posters while also experiencing an air raid or two! We were asked regularly to prove who we were by showing our identity cards or risk spending time being questioned by a policeman.

At lunchtime, we enjoyed a special WW2 lunch of fish, chips and mushy peas with rice pudding and jam for afters. Mrs Crockford and her team provided the lunch and dressed in the style of 1940’s women. In the afternoon, we were visited by Jerome who let us explore many WWII artefacts and he even brought his jeep.

At the end of the day, parents came in to the ‘evacuation hall’ to decide which evacuee they wanted to take home with them. It was a long wait for some of us…

Welcome Year 5!

Wow! That’s two weeks flown by already!

You have all been demonstrating our focused School learning behaviour of ‘Resilience’ these past two weeks- it was SO difficult to choose two children from each class for Celebration assembly this fortnight. Well done to you all! You should all be feeling so proud!

In our RE this week, you all very maturely reflected and discussed how our School mission links to The Ten Commandments, Beatitudes and the Bible and Jesus’ teachings.

We are very much looking forward to our WW2 dress up day next Friday! Including a special WW2 lunch. Did you know that fish and chips wasn’t rationed during the war?

It was lovely to see so many parents at the ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening event. We hope that it was informative all about year 5 for you. We are sending all of the information shared in this meeting to all parents via ParentMail in case you were unable to make it.

Reminders for next week…

  • Homework due on Tuesday please
  • PE on Thursday
  • WW2 dress up day on Friday

Have a lovely weekend!

Sporting Success and Ancient Myths

This week we celebrated sporting success with Maddie’s synchro swim team coming 2nd in a national competition in Sheffield and Chloe celebrating the end of a successful football season with a Player’s Player award. Congratulations to them and to all those who have taken part in a sporting team this year.

5SC added the final touches to their history work depicting the ancient Egyptian myths of Osirus, Isis, Seth and Horus.

Final weekly reminders for Year 5:

No home learning has been set this week, so is completed for this year – thank you to you all for encouraging your child to practise and consolidate their weekly learning and reading as this has had a real impact on their progress in school.

In Pursuit of Greatness

Another busy week flies by in Year 5…

This week the Year 5 children have had a taster of a day in the life of a Year 6 in their transition morning on Monday and all day on Friday.

In topic this week, we deepened our understanding of Egyptian myths. We retold the myth of the story of Osiris, Isis and Seth by creating a comic strip.

In our RE this week we have continued our learning on ‘Sacraments’ by thinking about how can we, as Christians, live our lives according to these interpretations of God’s will?

Finally, we finished our final tennis lesson for this term. The children’s forehand and backhand skills have vastly improved since the beginning of the term and they successfully kept high rally scores between themselves and their partner.

Reminders for next week:

  • Homework is set, alongside TT rockstars and SumDog
  • Book review is due in on Thursday please
  • Children have been given their SORA app logins to enjoy many many books over the summer holidays, including audiobooks which the children are very excited about!

Have a lovely weekend,

From Ancient Egypt to Las Vegas

Another creative week for year 5.

To provide a stimulus for our Egyptian topic, Year 5 enjoyed a virtual reality Egyptian workshop in school and explored different aspects of Ancient Egypt from the geography to the Gods to daily life. The children were so excited to take part and they really enjoyed the experience.

On Tuesday, 5SC went to Oaklands to complete their cookery DT project to make plant-based burgers and burger buns to reduce the use of meat and the impact on food waste and the environment. This also linked with their English and Geography topics. The children used scaling to work out ingredients for 2 burger buns and followed their recipe design to create their burgers. They developed numerous cookery skills and enjoyed being at Oaklands in the Food Tech department. Once cooked they assembled their burgers into their made burger boxes and tasted the finish product so they could evaluated it. They had a wonderful time creating and there were a lot of delicious burgers reviews after the tasting.

Reminders for next week:

Homework is set, please engage in TT Rockstars daily and complete the SumDog maths task online.

New class transition dates – Y5 children to meet their new year 6 teachers on Monday 3rd July in the morning and all day on Friday 7th July.

Have a lovely weekend in the sun.
