The best of the virtual world

We had a really exciting Key Stage 2 assembly this week entitled ‘Be Internet Legends’.

The pupils were reminded of the many different ways to stay safe on-line so that they can truly enjoy the best that the virtual world has to offer.  Reminding pupils to be “Sharp, Alert, Secure, Kind and Brave” when using on-line material, our presenters guided the children through Interland with the help of some good, and not so good, virtual characters.

On-line safety is an ever changing topic, with new issues to address on an almost monthly basis, so do please take the time to talk with your children about the ways in which they can stay safe on-line.  Looking up ‘Be Internet Legends’ or ParentZone.org.uk will provide a whole host of materials for discussion with your family.

Clean sweep – the numbers add up!

Congratulations to Aaron, Roberta, Matthew and Annie (below) who won the annual Maths Olympiad at Oaklands Catholic School this week.  Competing against other local primary schools, our pupils faced real life maths challenges, and after some gruelling tasks came out on top.

It was a close run thing, as they beat the second placed team by just 1 point!  “Who was the second placed team?” I hear you ask.  Well, it was the other team from St Peter’s, meaning that Caitlin, Daniel, Tilly and Joe ensured a ‘one-two’ finish for the brilliant mathematicians from St Peter’s!  Thank you to Mr Pratley who arranged for our teams to compete.

We have a published artist in school

Congratulations to Caitlin in Year 3 who won an art competition run by Hampshire County Council. The Interfaith Calendar competition recognises  and celebrates multi faith diversity in Hampshire and the artwork on display was of an exceptional quality.  Caitlin’s painting focused on the parable of the Lost Sheep and was the winner for the month of July.  Caitlin was the youngest of the winners in the competition, and was presented with a copy of the calendar and a £10 book voucher at an awards ceremony in Winchester attended by County Councillors and Hampshire’s School Improvement Manager.
Caitlin is pictured here with Mrs Nina Pearson, Art Lead for St Peter’s.

Kind donations to global seafarers

This afternoon we were able to hand over the fruits of your generosity.  Mr Patrick Binks and Fr John Lavers joined us for an assembly in which we donated our collection for the Apostleship of the Sea.  The assembly had, as you would expect at this time of year, a focus on Remembrance.  Particular attention was drawn to the service of seafaring personnel and members of the merchant marine who kept Britain safe and supplied during the two great global conflicts of the twentieth century, and to the many millions of service personal from 46 countries around the world who joined the UK in fighting tyranny and oppression.  We then noted how still today we rely on the service of the Royal Navy to protect shipping globally, and the work done by seafarers from foreign lands to provide us with food from around the world.  The donations will go to form Christmas care packages for sailors arriving in Portsmouth over the coming months.

Great thanks go to you and your families for their generous donations, and to Mrs Wilson for leading the campaign and coordinating the collections.
